What is ESOS?
The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme is a legal requirement for large companies to submit an energy report to the Environment Agency every four years.
ESOS applies to large UK undertakings and their corporate groups. It mainly affects businesses but can also apply to not-for-profit bodies and any other non-public sector undertakings that are large enough to meet the qualification criterion.
It applies to large undertakings with either
- over 250 employees
or
- an annual turnover in excess of €50 million and an annual balance sheet total in excess of €43 million.
How does it work?
ESOS requires that relevant organisations are aware of their total energy consumption and the energy savings which could reasonably be achieved via recommended improvements.
An ESOS Lead Assessor must be employed to carry out or oversee an assessment of overall energy consumption and identification of potential areas for savings
Fines for missing the deadline, failing to submit and energy audit or submitting a false or misleading report could result in penalty of up to £135,000 and publication of organisation details on the Environment Agency website.
