Dynamic Simulation Modelling (DSM) a very detailed energy modelling method used to assess the energy performance of complex buildings which can’t be assessed by SBEM or SAP.
DSM assessments are carried out on ‘Level 5’ commercial buildings, which have design features such as atriums, automatic blind control and ventilation with enhanced thermal coupling. Building Regulations reports and EPCs can be produced using DSM.
DSM can also be used for overheating analysis of dwellings.
The London Plan
While Building Regulation standards are the same within each of the four UK nations, planning and other requirements can vary significantly from one area to another. One example of this is the London Plan, which has been adopted by Local Authority planning regimes in the London area. One of the stipulations of this standard is an assessment of overheating risk in certain developments.
DSM can be used to accurately model the risk of overheating in new developments and comply with standards such as The London Plan.
Who should carry out a DSM assessment?
DSM assessments and EPCs can only be carried out by qualified Level 5 Non-Domestic Energy Assessors, who a registered with a relevant accreditation body.
