MEES (Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard)

What are Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards?

The Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard (MEES) sets out a minimum standard of energy performance for rented properties. It applies to all privately rented properties in England and Wales, which are legally required to have an Energy performance Certificate.

Non-domestic landlords can no longer grant new leases, renewals or extensions to existing leases for buildings with an EPC rating of F or G.

MEES was introduced in recognition of the poor levels of energy efficiency across much rental property stock in England and Wales and the lack of incentive for building owners and occupant to invest in improvements.

If a landlord lets a building which does not comply with MEES regulations, they can be subject to financial penalties, as well as public notification of their non-compliance.

Third Stone Ltd can help landlords and property owners establish if they the meet the minimum standard. We can also advise about energy efficiency improvements to meet or exceed the standard.
